After Tony said "You don't have to climb if you're scared, Bates", Joel could have said or done many things. For instance, he could have said that he really didn't want to go, that he wasn't a chicken, he just had some common sense. Instead of hoping that his dad would realize what they were up to, Joel could have told him, right out. He also could have just ridden to the pool and swam alone. Thankfully, I have never had someone try to goad me on like that and make me do something I didn't want to.
